Sir.
Mr Stagg has mentioned your observations respecting the difference between the five thousand dollars stipulated, and the seven thousand implied—The facts are truly stated in the proceedings1—The indians were, as there mentioned, told that the two thousand, and indeed the whole, would depend on their attachment and good dispositions; but that I was not authorised to stipulate more than five thousand. 1. Knox evidently was referring to the proceedings of the conference with the Cherokees, submitted with his second letter to GW of 29 Dec. but not now found. The discussion concerned the third of the additional treaty articles signed on 26 June, in which the United States “stipulate, in lieu of all former sums to be paid annually to furnish the Cherokee Indians with goods suitable for their use, to the amount of five thousand dollars yearly” (, 2:34).
