Th: Jefferson has the honor to inclose to the President translations of papers received from Mr Jaudenes.1 he submits whether it will not be proper to communicate them to Congress, as being nearly similar to those which closed the great communication on Spanish affairs. if the President thinks they should be sent in, Th: J. will have copies prepared.2

1. Jefferson sent translations of José de Jaudenes to Jefferson, 18 Dec., and the two documents enclosed with that letter, which discussed American and Spanish relations with Cherokee, Creek, and Chickasaw Indians on the southern border, stressing American provocations and Spanish restraint. Jaudenes, who also signed on behalf of the absent José Ignacio de Viar, requested that the information be given to GW, “to the end that these may determine what they shall judge convenient, seeing how much good may be produced by the friendly convention proposed, and how much evil by the omission of it” (, 27:584–85).
