From Thomas Jefferson to David Stone, 24 February 1809

Washington Feb. 24. 09.

Sir

I inclose you a letter from Capt Isaac Lane offering the service of 35. men as volunteers, but not specifying whether under the law of 1807. or 1808. the former being for 12. & the latter for 6. months. if under the latter, the law has authorised the Governors to accept; if under the former, the authority given to the President to accept, has been by him delegated to the Governors. your Excellency therefore being in either case the proper person to act on this letter, I take the liberty of inclosing it to you to do thereon what you shall deem best. I avail myself with pleasure of this occasion of assuring you of my great esteem & respect.

Th: Jefferson
