Sir

I informed you in my letter of Mar. 6. of the measure I had taken to answer the object of your’s of Feb. 25. I now inclose you two accounts of the family of General Washington from persons intimately acquainted with them and entirely to be relied on, and tender you my best wishes & respects.

Daniel Carroll Brent, to whom TJ had written on 6 Mch. on Scott’s behalf, sought information from his friend Alexander Spotswood, who enclosed material relevant to Scott’s proposed biography of general washington and also offered to share letters his grandfather had written while serving as lieutenant governor of Virginia. Spotswood was married to George Washington’s niece Elizabeth Washington (Alexander Spotswood to Daniel Carroll Brent, 16 Mch., in MHi, endorsed by TJ; Washington, Papers, Pres.
