Sir

I have this day remitted to messrs. Gibson & Jefferson of Richmond 66⅔ Dollars for you, for which I now inclose you an order. Accept my best wishes & respects

Gibson and Jefferson Richmond.”

Charles Smith (1778–1815), a resident of Louisa County, may have been known to TJ through shared connections to the Lewis family. He and his brother Christopher rented slaves to TJ (Sarah Travers Lewis Scott Anderson, Lewises, Meriwethers and Their Kin: Lewises and Meriwethers with Their Tracings through the Families Whose Records Are Herein Contained [Richmond, 1938], 359, 391; MB description begins James A. Bear, Jr., and Lucia C. Stanton, eds., Jefferson’s Memorandum Books: Accounts, with Legal Records and Miscellany, 1767-1826, Princeton, 1997, The Papers of Thomas Jefferson, Second Series description ends , 2:1092, 1119, 1121, 1134; Vol. 36:21).

On this day, TJ wrote an identical letter to Christopher Smith, indicating a remittance of $400 (PrC in MHi; at foot of sheet: “Mr. Christopher Smith”; endorsed by TJ in ink on verso; recorded in SJL with notation “400”). TJ enclosed an order on Gibson & Jefferson to pay Christopher Smith $400 for value received (same; pressed on same sheet as letter to Smith; at foot of text: “400. D.” and “Messrs. Gibson & Jefferson Richmond”).
