To Francis Taliaferro Brooke

Washington Dec. 20. 1802.

Th: Jefferson presents his salutations to Mr. Brooke Speaker of the Senate of Virginia, and availing himself of the moment when the confidence of his country has placed him where the little volume accompanying this may be a convenience, he asks his acceptance of it as a testimony of the respect of the giver.

A veteran of the Continental army and brother of former Virginia governor and attorney general Robert Brooke, Francis Taliaferro Brooke (1763–1851) was a lawyer from Fredericksburg, Virginia, first elected to the state senate in 1800. A supporter of the president, he was elected speaker on 7 Dec. 1802. He served a short tenure, after which he became a circuit court judge and eventually a judge on the Virginia Supreme Court of Appeals (DVB description begins John T. Kneebone and others, eds., Dictionary of Virginia Biography, Richmond, 1998- , 3 vols. description ends , 2:259–61).
