[Philadelphia, June 7, 1794]

Mr. Hamilton Dr. to Duplaine

for the 12 numbers of the paris monthly chronicle for the year

1792 £1—10s

DS, Hamilton Papers, Library of Congress.

1Duplaine is listed in the Philadelphia directory for 1794 as a “teacher of the French & English languages” (Edmund Hogan, The Prospect of Philadelphia, and Check on the Next Directory … [Philadelphia, 1795]). Presumably he is the same Antoine Charbonnet Duplaine who was French consul in Boston in 1793. Duplaine’s exequatur had been revoked in October, 1793, for irregularities in his diplomatic conduct. See Stephen Higginson to H, July 26, 1793, note 2, and August 24, 1793, note 7.

2At the bottom of this account John Meyer, a clerk in the Treasury Department, wrote and Duplaine signed the following notation: “Received the above in full of J. Meyer June 7th 1794. A. C. Duplaine.”
