Agreement with Titus Salter1

[Portsmouth, New Hampshire] November 18, 1790. Joseph Whipple, signing for Hamilton on behalf of the United States Government, agrees to pay Salter $555.99 to maintain “the Light House Situate on the Island of New Castle in … New Hampshire at the entrance of the River Piscataqua” and to serve as keeper of the lighthouse.

1Salter was commander of Fort William and Mary on New Castle Island in Portsmouth Harbor. One of his responsibilities was the maintenance of the lighthouse on the island.
