From Tench Coxe1

Treasury Department, Revenue Office, October 18, 1794. “I have the honor to inclose to you a letter from the Superv. of Maryland2 on account of the pay of Genl. Smith’s3 Detachment.… I have sent a copy to the Secy. at War4 and also because the agency of this office for the War Departmt. having been interfered with by some operations of other agents not made known to me, I am without the necessary knowledge of what has been done in order to determine now what ought to be done. I wish to be immediately informed of any thing wh. it may be useful or necessary for me to do.…”

4On October 18, 1794, Coxe wrote to Henry Knox: “Mr. Coxe has the honor to inclose a copy of a letter … from Maryland.… The pay of the Troops … will of course meet all necessary attention from the War Department, the application concerning them to the Treasy. being obviously irregular.

“In regard to the reception of the Troops on their return, the secy. at War will be pleased to give it such share of his instructions as he may see proper; it will be attended to by Mr. Coxe also for which purpose, he is endeavouring to acquire a knowledge of what has been done in that respect in the course to the Rendezvous & from thence Westward.…” (LC, RG 75, Letters of Tench Coxe, Commissioner of the Revenue, Relating to the Procurement of Military, Naval, and Indian Supplies, National Archives.)
