George Washington to ———, 30 June 1780

George Washington to ———

Headquarters, Ramapo, New Jersey, June 30, 1780. Returns “the Proof Sheet of the Proclamation … with some corrections.”1 Requests that five hundred copies be “struck off and forwarded … with great secrecy and dispatch.”

LS, in the handwriting of H, The Sol Feinstone Collection, Library of the American Philosophical Society, Philadelphia.

1Although the enclosure has not been found, it was undoubtedly one of several proclamations offering pardons to deserters on the condition that they return to their units. See, for example, the proclamations issued by Washington, dated May 31 and August 29, 1790 (Df, George Washington Papers, Library of Congress).
