[New York, December 26, 1793. On January 5, 1794, Hamilton wrote to Stevens: “Your letter of the 26 of December is received.” Letter not found.]

1Stevens had served as a lieutenant colonel in the artillery of the Continental Army during the American Revolution. After the war he moved from Providence to New York City, where he became a successful merchant with extensive interests in foreign trade. He was a sachem in the Tammany Society.
