From Alexander Hamilton to George Washington, [27–30 December 1795]

To George Washington

[New York, December 27–30, 1795]1

Sir

I have the pleasure to send you enclosed two letters one from Young La Fayette the other from his Preceptor.2 They appear reconciled to some further delay.

I take the liberty to inclose copy of a letter to the Secy of State respecting Mr. Cutting.3 I do not know upon the whole what sort of a man Mr. Cutting is, and I have heared unfavourable whispers. But as to the particular subject of his ⟨claim⟩4 I really think it deserves an indulgent consideration, and that it is expedient & right to favour it to a liberal extent. Some reflections have made me think it adviseable to place the matter under your eye. Neither the Secy of State nor Mr. Cutting will be informed of this.

I wrote you a few lines two or three days ago5 in answer to your letter concerning Mr. Randolph’s pamphlet.6

Yr. very respectful & Affect servt

A Hamilton

The President of the US

1On the cover of this letter, Washington wrote: “Colo. Alexr Hamilton recd. 31st. Decr. 1796.” This is a mistake, for the year should read “1795.”

2George Washington Motier Lafayette to Washington, December 25, 1795 (ALS, George Washington Papers, Library of Congress); Felix Frestel to Washington, December 25, 1795 (ALS, George Washington Papers, Library of Congress). For information on Lafayette and Frestel, see H to Washington, October 16, 26, November 19, 26, December 24, 1795; Washington to H, October 29, November 10, 18, 23, 28, December 22, 1795.

4The word within broken brackets has been taken from JCHW description begins John C. Hamilton, ed., The Works of Alexander Hamilton (New York, 1851–1856). description ends , VI, 82.
