Dr Sir
A friend of mine has a sudden and unexpected call for 5000 Dollars which I am anxious to assist him with. Can you assist me with 1000 under the certainty that it will be replaced on Wednesday next? If you can you will do me a pleasure.2

1. Varick was mayor of New York City.
2. At the bottom of this letter the following receipt is written: “Received from Richard Varick Esqr a check for 1000 Dollars above Mentioned. J. W. Patterson for Coll. Hamilton. May 4th, 1798.”
