To James O’Hara1

[Philadelphia, December 18, 1792. On January 10, 1793, O’Hara wrote to Hamilton: “Being absent on Special business, I had not the honor to answer your letter of the 18th ulto. sooner.” Letter not found.]

1O’Hara, who had emigrated from Ireland to the United States before the American Revolution, had served during the war in the quartermaster’s department. In the seventeen-eighties he settled in Pittsburgh and in 1790 acted as contractor for the Army during the campaign of Brigadier General Josiah Harmar against the western Indians. On April 19, 1792, O’Hara was appointed quartermaster general of the newly reorganized United States Army.
