[Philadelphia, June 19, 1794]

There was a Mr. Newton who appeared as President or Secretary of the Democratic Society at Norfolk. Who is he? Had he any connection with the Gentleman of that name lately an Inspector?1 I will thank you to make inquiry & let me know.

Thomas Newton, Jr., was inspector of the revenue for Survey No. 4 in Virginia from March 8, 1792, until his resignation in November, 1792 (Executive Journal, I description begins Journal of the Executive Proceedings of the Senate of the United States of America (Washington, 1828), I. description ends , 102, 111, 125, 136). His father, a merchant, was president of the Norfolk, Virginia, Republican (or Democratic) Society. See Eugene P.
