From Alexander Hamilton to Thomas Jefferson, [31 August 1791]

To Thomas Jefferson

[Philadelphia, August 31, 1791]

Mr. Hamilton presents his compliments to the Secretary of State. He would think the turn of expression on the whole safer, if instead of what follows the words “depreciated medium”1 the following was substituted—“and that in the final liquidation of the payments, which shall have been made, due regard will be had for an equitable allowance for the circumstance of depreciation.”2

JCHW description begins John C. Hamilton, ed., The Works of Alexander Hamilton (New York, 1851–1856). description ends , IV, 240.

1For the draft of the letter discussed by H, see Jefferson to H, August 31, 1791, note 1.

2Jefferson accepted H’s recommendation in the letter which was sent to Jean Baptiste de Ternant, dated September 1, 1791 (ALS, letterpress copy, Thomas Jefferson Papers, Library of Congress.)
