From Alexander Hamilton to Ann Mitchell, 28 June–10 July 1804

To Ann Mitchell1

[New York, June 28–July 10, 1804. Nathaniel Pendleton described the eighth item on a list of ten,2 which were given to him after Hamilton’s death, as a “Letter to Mrs. Mitchell inclosing 400 dollars as was mentioned on the outside. Sealed.” Letter not found.]

1Ann Mitchell, the daughter of James and Ann Lytton, was H’s cousin. Her mother was the sister of H’s mother, Rachel Lavien. In 1759, when Ann Mitchell was sixteen years old, she married John Kirwan Venton. They had one child, a daughter named Ann Lytton Venton. John Venton died in 1776, and in 1780 his widow married George Mitchell, a native of Scotland who had emigrated first to Virginia and then to St. Croix. Ann Mitchell died in Christiansted in 1827. See Ann Mitchell to H, 1796.
