Tobias Lear to Thomas Jefferson, 24 February 1793

Tobias Lear to Thomas Jefferson

[Philadelphia] Feby 24th 1793

The enclosed letter came under cover to the President, and is by his direction transmitted to Mr Jefferson.1

The President sends likewise a letter from Mr Vall Travers to him, with a request that Mr Jefferson will peruse the same, and if it requires an acknowledgement that Mr Jefferson would give it to Mr Vall Travers.2

AL, DLC: Jefferson Papers. Jefferson mistakenly endorsed this letter as “recd Feb. 23. 93”.

1The letter from Rodolph Vall-Travers to David Rittenhouse, president of the American Philosophical Society, of 13 Dec. 1792, came enclosed in Vall-Travers’s letter to GW of 10 Dec. 1792 (see also John Conrad Zollickoffer to GW, 18 April 1793, and notes 1–2). Jefferson passed along the letter, including its enclosure regarding a new method of hemp manufacturing, to the American Philosophical Society (Jefferson Papers, description begins Julian P. Boyd et al., eds. The Papers of Thomas Jefferson. 41 vols. to date. Princeton, N.J., 1950–. description ends 25:256). Vall-Travers’s letter to Rittenhouse and its enclosure are at PPAmP.

2No reply from Jefferson to Vall-Travers’s letter to GW of 10 Dec. 1792 has been identified.
