Archibald Robertson to Thomas Jefferson, 24 February 1820

From Archibald Robertson

Lynchburg 24th Feby 1820

Dear Sir

In consequence of a disolution of partnership, it has become necessary to close all the accounts of the concern, in order to a final settlement with the partners, and as it is uncertain when you will be in the Forest, I enclose a copy of your account, together with a Bond for the amount, which you will please execute & return as early as convenient, Mr Yancey has examined the acct & says it is right so far as relates to his dealings on your account, should there be any errors they [w]ill be rectified, or you can delay executing the Bond, until such errors (if any) be explained or corrected, your Bond to Wm Brown & Co is in my hands and will be forwarded you, or handed when you are again in Bedford which ever you prefer—

I shall continue to do business on my own acct and will at all times be glad to furnish what goods you may want from this place—

hoping to hear from you ere long—I remain

Respectfully Your mo ob St

A. Robertson

RC (MHi); torn at seal; between dateline and salutation: “Thomas Jefferson Esqr”; endorsed by TJ as received 28 Feb. 1820 and so recorded in SJL.

The partnership of A. Robertson & Company, comprised of Robertson, Boyd Miller, and Samuel Read, had dissolved on 31 Aug. 1819. Robertson had operated the firm’s store in Lynchburg, Read ran a store in Otter Bridge in Bedford County, and Miller was based in London, England (Va. Reports description begins Reports of Cases Argued and Adjudged in the Court of Appeals of Virginia, 1798–  (title varies; originally issued in distinct editions of separately numbered volumes with Va. Reports volume numbers retroactively assigned; original volume numbers here given parenthetically) description ends , 58 [17 Grattan]: 545). Neither the enclosed account nor the bond for TJ’s debt to A. Robertson & Company has been found, but on 7 Mar. 1820 TJ recorded that he had signed a note “to Archibald Robertson for 4256.08 the amount of my balance due to him on the 31st. of last August. This includes a bond of 233–15–1 of 1807. & int. which is to be cancelled.” The earlier bond that was to be canceled was a promissory note dated 1 Sept. 1807 from TJ’s Poplar Forest overseer, Burgess Griffin, and was presumably the bond to wm brown & co (MB description begins James A. Bear Jr. and Lucia C. Stanton, eds., Jefferson’s Memorandum Books: Accounts, with Legal Records and Miscellany, 1767–1826, 1997, The Papers of Thomas Jefferson, Second Series description ends , 2:1210, 1309, 1362; Robertson to TJ, 16 Sept. 1824).
