1. Meredith W. D. Jones was the Charlottesville agent for the Boston bookselling company of Cummings, Hilliard & Co. First contracted by Thomas Jefferson in 1824, this company was one of the major suppliers of books to stock the University of Virginia Library in its first years (William Hilliard to JM, 11 July 1826; Kevin J. Hayes, The Road to Monticello: The Life and Mind of Thomas Jefferson [New York, 2008], 629–33; Bruce, History of the University of Virginia, 2:190–92). In 1826 Jones also served as an official of the Agricultural Society of Albemarle, of which JM served as president from 1817 to 1824 (True, “Minute Book of the Albemarle Agricultural Society,” printed in Annual Report of the American Historical Association for […] 1918, 1:322–23; Address to the Agricultural Society of Albemarle, Editorial Note, , 1:257).
