Thursday, July 12. [1827]

The Rector was taken seriously ill during the night; and is now confined to his bed.1 No meeting of the board, except for attendance on the examination.

1. “A letter has been received in this City from a gentleman in Charlottesville, dated on the 12th. which states […] that Me. Madison was taken extremely ill with the Cholera Morbus on the night before; and that on the morning of the 12th at 11 o’clock, he was no better: Mr. Monroe was with him; & that Dr. Dungleson was attending him.

“We understand, from a passenger who arrived in last Evening Charlottesville stage, that Mr. Madison was much better. We rejoice that the valuable life of this pure and illustrious man is spared to his grateful country” (Richmond Enquirer, 17 July 1827).
