1Here JM placed an asterisk and wrote in the left margin: “*for Agricl. Socy. of Albemarle.” The box of seeds was more than likely from the Muséum National d’Histoire Naturelle in Paris. A similar shipment was received by JM in 1821 (PJM-RS description begins David B. Mattern et al., eds., The Papers of James Madison: Retirement Series (3 vols. to date; Charlottesville, Va., 2009–). description ends , 2:338, 461–62 and nn. 1–2).
