Highland Octr 5. 1818

Dear Sir

I had the pleasure to receive your letter of the 2d. yesterday. We shall set out to morrow & be with you the day after. I am much pushd by many important concerns to get to Washington as soon as possible, but will certainly remain a day with you. Mr Crowninshield has resignd, & that dept., suffers, most essentially in some interesting circumstances. I have thoughts of offering it to Mr Snider of Pena.,1 but on this & other matters we will confer when we meet. Mrs Monroe’s & my best respects to Mrs Madison. Respectfy—your friend & servt

1Simon Snyder (1759–1819) was a self-made businessman and judge of the court of common pleas of Northumberland County, Pennsylvania, who served in the state house of representatives, 1797–1807, three terms as its speaker. He was elected governor of Pennsylvania in 1808 and served two subsequent terms, leaving office in 1817, when he was elected to the state senate. A Jeffersonian Republican, he was a strong supporter of JM and the War of 1812.
