Dear Sir,
Should my Son Matthew happen to be near Monticello, I have desired him to pay his respects to you: this son has already been in the United States, whence he lately returned; but it has been deemed prudent for him to spend this winter there also, on account of his health. Matthew Maury (1800–77), merchant, was born in Liverpool, England, the son of TJ’s friend James Maury and grandson of his teacher, Rev. James Maury. He was educated at Eton College, entered his father’s commission business by 1815, and by 1819 had returned to the United States to secure tobacco shipments. In 1832 Maury settled permanently in New York City, where he established a mercantile firm with his brother Rutson Maury. A longtime member of the New York City Chamber of Commerce, he served as its secretary, 1849–53 (DeWint-M: Maury Family Papers; Anne Fontaine Maury, ed., Intimate Virginiana: A Century of Maury Travels by Land and Sea [1941], 6, 89–107, 319, 321; Maury’s passport application, 25 May 1864 [DNA: RG 59, PA]; New-York Times, 19 Sept. 1877).
