Dear Sir
The rain now falling will I think enable Johnson’s boats to go down. I send him therefore a box of wine for Colo Allston of Charleston which I have taken the liberty of addressing to your care to be forwarded. I think you formerly advertised spun cotton for sale; I must request you to send me 150. ℔ of what runs 5. yds to the ℔. if you have it not yourself, you will do me the favor to get it. if to this you can add one or two good cheeses it will add to the obligation. I make no more apologies for the trouble because I am sure you are tired of their repetition and that your kind good will renders them unnecessary. Affectionately your’s.

William Lowndes, a member of the United States House of Representatives from South Carolina, 1811–22, visited James Madison at Montpellier and TJ at Monticello in May 1818. In a small volume of historical anecdotes that he compiled between 1819 and 1822, Lowndes recalled that “I saw Mr Jefferson for an hour at Montichello—who told me that in his admon when a war seemed probable with Spain he directed Genl Wilkinson to state what number of troops would be necessary to conquer Cuba & Mexico. For Mexico he required only provisions landed at Vera Cruz?—for Cuba 20,000 men to take & hold it” (MS in DLC: Lowndes Papers; in Lowndes’s hand; undated).
