Dear Sir
This moment arrived here, I find your favor of June 26 and lest the notes should be wanting, I sign them without loss of time and inclose them with assurances of my great esteem & respect

On 2 July 1817 TJ recorded that the notes returned here included a renewal of his standing loan of $2,000 from the Bank of Virginia and a $3,000 note on the Richmond branch of the Second Bank of the United States, with the latter intended to cover his current expenses and pay off another $2,000 note that had been drawn on the Bank of Virginia on 24 May 1817 (, 2:1333, 1335).
