Please to pay to my order, at the Bank of Virginia in Richmond, on the first day of January 1821, Seven hundred and fifty dollars, being the remaining portion of the sum of fifteen hundred dollars, allowed me as Professor, by the Visitors of the University of Virginia at Charlottesville.

MS (ViU: TJP-PP); in Cooper’s hand, with notations in other hands as indicated; at foot of text in Cooper’s hand: “To Alexander Garrett Esqr Treasurer of the University of Virginia”; with signed notes, by TJ as rector adjacent to closing and signature (“this shall be paid”), and by Garrett as bursar perpendicularly across middle of page (“Accepted”); endorsed in two unidentified hands and signed by Cooper on verso; signed notation beneath Cooper’s signature on verso by Henry Kuhl (cashier of the Farmers’ & Mechanics’ Bank of Philadelphia) asking that Manuel Eyre (a director of the Second Bank of the United States) pay William Dandridge (cashier of the Bank of Virginia).
Around this time Cooper wrote Garrett that he had drawn for the $750 “with the approbation of Mr Jefferson” (RC in ViU: PP; undated; endorsed in at least two unidentified hands, in part, as “pd 18th Novr 1820”).
