From Alexander Hamilton to George Washington, 23 March 1793

To George Washington

Treasury Departmt. March 23d. 1793.

The Secretary of the Treasury has the honor to submit to The President of the United States the enclosed communication from the Commissioner of the Revenue.1

From the nature of the circumstances represented it appears to the Secretary advisable to embrace the offer which is made by Joseph Anthony & son.2

2. The offer is described in an entry in JPP description begins “Journal of the Proceedings of the President,” George Washington Papers, Library of Congress. description ends for March 26, 1793, as follows: “The Secretary of the Treasury laid before me a proposal of Josh. Anthony & Son to furnish 1000 Galls. of Oil for the Light-Ho. on Cape Henry @ 3/3 per Gal. The Commissr. of the Revenue states the immediate want of Oil at that establishmt. & that the above is the lowest for wh. it can now be purchased in this City. Upon these considerations I approved of purchasing sd. oil” (JPP description begins “Journal of the Proceedings of the President,” George Washington Papers, Library of Congress. description ends , 90–91).
