[Philadelphia, February, 1793.] Sends list of recommendations for positions as Indian commissioners.1

1. This list, which consists of twenty-six names arranged by states, is entitled “Characters for consideration as Commissioners.”
On March 1, 1793, Washington nominated Benjamin Lincoln of Massachusetts, Beverley Randolph of Virginia, and Timothy Pickering of Pennsylvania “to be Commissioners on the part of the United States, for holding a conference or treaty with the hostile Indians” (November 22, December 15–28, 1792; H to Hammond, December 29, 1792; “Cabinet Meeting. Opinion Respecting the Proposed Treaty with the Indians Northwest of the River Ohio,” February 25, 1793.
