Sir

In confidence of your indulgence towards whatever is conducive to the public good, you are now addressed by a young man, with all that respect and veneration, due to your revered character; who intreats your acceptance of the Volume accompanying this letter.1

That you may enjoy all the happiness this life will admit of, & be received hereafter into the immortal temple of the most High is the ardent wish of Sir Your Most Obedient & very Humble Servant

Solomon Cotton, Jr. (1775–1806), a Boston bookseller, shifted his business to Baltimore in 1797.

1Cotton presented GW with A Collection of the Speeches of the President of the United States to Both Houses of Congress, At the opening of every Session, with their Answers. Also, the Addresses to the President, with his Answers, from the Time of his Election: With an Appendix, Containing The Circular Letter of General Washington to the Governors of the several States, and his Farewell Orders, to the Armies of America, and the Answer (Boston, 1796). The likely presentation volume with GW’s signature on the title page was in his library at his death (see Griffin, Catalogue of the Washington Collection, description begins Appleton P. C. Griffin, comp. A Catalogue of the Washington Collection in the Boston Athenæum. Cambridge, Mass., 1897. description ends 219).
