From Thomas Jefferson to George Washington, 5 May 1793

To George Washington

May. 5. 1793.

Th: Jefferson with his respects to the President has the honour to inclose him the following papers.

  • 1. a letter from Mr. Pinckney, with the papers it refers to, on the subject of Mr. Albion Coxe, employed as Assayer, who is arrived.
  • 2. a copy of the letter written to Mr. Morris and Mr. Pinckney, on the subject of M. de la Fayette,1 copies of which were sent to Messrs. Humphreys, Carmichael and Short. The two former were to act on the subject, because nearer the proper scene. The communication was made to the three latter merely for their information, and that they might know the views of the government in case they should have occasion to say or do any thing on the subject.
  • 3. Mr. Fox’s pamphlet.

(2) TJ to Gouverneur Morris and Thomas Pinckney, 15 Mch. 1793. (3) Charles James Fox, A Letter from the Right Honourable Charles James Fox, to the Worthy and Independent Electors of the City and Liberty of Westminster (London, 1793), the third edition of which was owned by TJ (Sowerby, description begins E. Millicent Sowerby, comp., Catalogue of the Library of Thomas Jefferson, Washington, D.C., 1952–59, 5 vols. description ends No. 2829).

TJ submitted this letter and its enclosures to the President on 6 May 1793, and Washington returned them the same day (Washington, Journal description begins Dorothy Twohig, ed., The Journal of the Proceedings of the President, 1793–1797, Charlottesville, 1981 description ends , 129). Later that day TJ wrote a brief note to the President returning “the copy of the letter on the subject of M. de la Fayette, supposing it might be agreeable to keep it by him,” since another copy was retained for the office (RC in DNA: RG 59, MLR, addressed “The President of the US.,” endorsed by Tobias Lear; Tr in Lb in same, SDC; not recorded in SJL).
