To George Washington
[Philadelphia, May 8, 1793]
The Secretary of the Treasury has the honor to submit to the consideration of the President of the UStates a communication from the Commissioner of the Revenue of the 6 instant1—respecting a contract provisionally entered into with Moses M. Hayes for a further supply of Oil for the Light Houses.2 It is respectfully conceived that the arrangement is in every view eligible.

2. An entry in for May 9, 1793, reads as follows: “The Secretary of the Treasury sent me a bond of Moses M. Hayes as principal & Jno. C. Jones as surity (both of Boston) in the sum of 10,545 Dolls. to furnish 14,000 Gals. of Oil for the Light Houses in the Eastern States” ( , 112). A copy of the contract between Hayes and the United States, approved by Washington on May 16, 1793, may be found in RG 26, Lighthouse Deeds and Contracts, National Archives.
