Gentlemen of the Senate,

I nominate William Keais, of North Carolina, to be Collector for the port of Washington, and Inspector of the Revenue for the same; vice Nathan Keais, deceased.1

Go: Washington

LS, DNA: RG 46, Records of Executive Proceedings, President’s Messages—Executive Nominations; LB, DLC:GW.

1Treasury Secretary Oliver Wolcott, Jr., wrote GW’s secretary Bartholomew Dandridge, Jr., on 16 Dec., informing him that William Keais had been recommended to replace Nathaniel Keais as collector and adding “that it will be a matter of course” to appoint him inspector as well (DLC:GW). William Keais (d. 1808), a son of Nathaniel Keais, had served as deputy collector. He remained as collector until his death.
