The bearer of this is a Mr Campbell who has lately brought from Europe some Machinery to hand for establishing a Cotton Manufactory at Patterson. He wants to ascertain when & how soon the proper accommodation & Materials can be found there.2 Be so good as to aid him with all the necessary lights.

An entry in the for July 16, 1793, reads as follows: “The Governor laid before the Board a letter from John Campbell stocking weaver relative to the accomodating him with the necessary buildings and lotts for his Factory. Resolved, that the Superintendant be authorized to accommodate Mr Campbell with the necessary buildings and lotts for his Factory as far as he thinks will be consistant with the Interest of the Society; at an Interest not less than Seven ⅌ Cent ⅌ Annum for the Money laid out; and the rent of the lott at such a reasonable rate to encourage his settling in the Town” ( 87–88).
