To John Jay from Richard Lawrence, 27 January 1797

From Richard Lawrence

New York 1st. mo[nth] 27th 1797.

Esteemed Friend

Thine of 23d inst. forwarded by the Mayor I have just received, with the warrant for 1000 Dollars and a Copy of the Act, and in observing the Contents am induced to make the following remarks—1 I am Sensible of the propriety of thy observation on the necessity of economy in the distribution of this Money; and shall therefore carefully observe the same; and assure thee it is not an Object of profit to be subjected to the importunities of this distres’d people and so frequently interrupted in my regular Business for the small Commission heretofore Charged of five pr Cent; but at thy request and a desire to be useful to suffering humanity shall again undertake it and hope to render a Satisfactory statement of its expenditure—

I sincerely regret the denial of releif to any who may have come here since the passing of the former Act, even tho’ now resident amongst us and equally objects of our compassion; particularly on account of four families within my present knowledge, who have come here since that time and whose necessities are really urgent; two of them particularly on Account of ill health, they have all resided in our City for some time past— I therefore hope thee will consider again whether they do not come within the intent of the last law; am aware any who may come after it are exempted—2 I may also inform thee have found a necessity of anticipating the present appropriation by advancing a considerable sum to purchase fire Wood, Blankets, and some Cloathing for the most needy, the first just before and the latter Articles at the time of the extreme Cold weather we had some time ago, in this I hope to have thy approbation, and waiting thy Answer when Convenient remain respectfully Thy friend
