From John Jay to John H. Remsen, 12 May 1796

To John H. Remsen

NYork 12 May 1796

Dr Sir

As I see you every Day, it may seem singular that I shd communicate to you by Letter any thing wh I might with more Ease be mentioned to you in Conversation. In times when it is so common for Men and Measures to be misrepresented, more than ordinary Caution is adviseable; and that Consideration induces me to commit to paper, what I shd otherwise say to you personally in conversation on the following Subject—1

I daily experience so many Inconveniences from not having a Secy constantly with me, that I must endeavour to have one who could devote his whole time to the Business of that place. Your professional and more lucrative occupations do not permit me you to do this; and the Interest I have in yr. Welfare forbids me to regret your being more proffitably employed.

The Character given ^me^ of you when you came into the office, has wholey been verified by your Conduct, wh. has not only afforded me Reason to be satisfied, but justly entitled you to that Esteem and Regard, and to those friendly wishes for your Happiness and Prosperity with wh. I am Dr Sir, your most obt. & h’ble Servt

John Remsen Esqr.

Dft, NNC (EJ: 08959).

1For biographical information on Remsen, see Proclamation on Yellow Fever, 13 August 1795, note 5, above. For Remsen’s reply, see John H. Remsen to JJ, 14 May, below. Remsen was replaced as private secretary by David S. Jones. See Proclamation regarding Quarantine, 27 Apr. 1797, note 3, below.
