From Alexander Hamilton to Gaspard Joseph Amand Ducher, 22 June 1792

To Gaspard Joseph Amand Ducher1

[Philadelphia, June 22, 1792. On October 22, 1792, Ducher wrote to Hamilton: “J’ai reçu votre Lettre du 22. juin der.” Letter not found.]

1Ducher had been appointed French vice consul ad interim at Portsmouth, New Hampshire, in 1786, and in 1788 he was transferred to Wilmington, North Carolina. He returned to Paris in 1790, and for the next three years he sought to induce the French government to adopt a policy of encouragement to trade and navigation similar to that embodied in the English navigation laws (Frederick L. Nussbaum, Commercial Policy in the French Revolution [Washington, 1923], 14, 17, 35, 271–304).
