Mr. Coxe has the honor to enclose to Mr. Jefferson, a copy of a proceeding of the late board of Treasury, confirmed on the 21st. April 1787 by Congress (see page 55. Vol. 12. Journal of Congress) which he presumes to be the object of enquiry. It would have been transmitted sooner, but the gentlemen in the Secys. office being unable yesterday to find it, Mr. Coxe employed two of his Clerks this day on the Subject, being convinced, that some thing of the kind must exist.

The enclosed copy of a proceeding was a 4 Apr. 1787 report to the Confederation Congress from the Board of Treasury indicating how much western land had been surveyed by Thomas Hutchins, geographer of the United States, and proposing that land sales begin without waiting for seven ranges of townships to be surveyed, as had originally been planned (Tr in DLC; printed in , xxxii, 155–7). Congress approved the Board’s proposals with only minor amendments on 21 Apr. 1787 (, xxxii, 225–7). See also Report on Boundaries with the Western Indians, 10 Mch. 1793.
