ALS, CtHi: Oliver Wolcott, Jr., Papers.

1For the resumption of Bartholomew Dandridge, Jr., as GW’s private secretary, see GW to James McHenry, 1 Aug., found at GW to Dandridge, 5 June, n.4; see also GW to John Dandridge, 11 July.

2Bartholomew Dandridge resumed entries in the account book on 8 Aug. after they had ceased on 14 June with GW’s departure from Philadelphia. Among the entries recorded under 8 Aug. was one for $20 to cover “Dandridge’s expenses from Mount Vernon” (Household Accounts description begins Presidential Household Accounts, 1793–97. Manuscript, Historical Society of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia. description ends ; see also GW’s first letter to Wolcott on 13 June, and Dandridge to GW, 7 Aug.).

3Wolcott replied to GW from Philadelphia on 12 Aug.: “I have had the honour to receive your Letter of the first instant by Mr Dandridge & have paid to him the balance of the monies placed in my hands, & a sum of Five hundred Dollars on account of your compensation.

“There is nothing new here; the enclosed came under cover to me this morning” (ALS, DLC:GW; copy, CtHi: Oliver Wolcott, Jr., Papers). The enclosure has not been identified, but it may have been Alexander Hamilton’s letter to GW dated 10 August.
