The letter to General Wayne herewith submitted being of great importance I concluded it ought not to be transmitted until you had full time to consider its contents, and to approve or disapprove the same or direct alterations therein.1 Opportunities will occur in the beginning of next week for its transmission. I have the honor to be respectfully your Obedient Servant

1. Knox presumably submitted a draft for his letter to Maj. Gen. Anthony Wayne dated 7 June. That letter altered Wayne’s orders in light of "the establishment which it is understood has been made by British Troops at the rapids of the Miami [Maumee]." Wayne was given flexibility to increase his troop strength and, if it was "necessary" to his prosecution of the Indian campaign and he was certain of success, "to dislodge" the British troops, "taking care after they shall be in your power to treat them with humanity and politeness and to send them immediately to the nearest British Garrison." Wayne was also cautioned to treat all other British and Spanish troops "with the Civility heretofore directed" (Knopf, Anthony Wayne, 336-39).
