The paper you put into my hands to-day was attentively perused by us all.1 I am now going over it by myself, but it will not be possible to get thro’ in time to return it before bed-time. Before breakfast in the morning I will wait upon you with it. I am most respectfully your obt servt

1Pickering probably commented on a copy of GW’s farewell address.

Richard Peters later claimed that GW showed the draft to Pickering, “who returned it without any Correction exactly as it is printed” (Peters to John Jay, 14 April 1811, in Paltsits, Farewell Address, description begins Victor Hugo Paltsits. Washington’s Farewell Address: In facsimile, with transliterations of all the drafts of Washington, Madison, & Hamilton, together with their correspondence and other supporting documents.
