From William Pearce

Alexandria June 4th 1794

Sir

In reading your letter that I Recevd this Evening I find you have advised me to take good security for the flour1—I did Intend to mention to you that he has Given me Alexander Smyth as one of the Indorsers and Jams Duglass for the other2 and I am Told by Doctor Craik and Several others that the Security is good. I am Sir with the greatest respect You[r] Huml. Servt

P.S. I am not sure wheathr I mentiond this In my Letter of the 27th.3

2. Pearce probably was referring to Alexandria merchant Alexander Smith and possibly to the James Douglass who operated a store and mill near the mouth of Difficult Run at this time. That James Douglass later moved to Alexandria and went through a bankruptcy in 1810.

3. Pearce’s letter to GW of 27 May has not been found.
