I have done something but not what I intended. The sitting of two Courts1 & my professional engagements there prevent the execution of my plan. I no longer withold the paper lest circumstances should render it of any use.2

1. The New York Court of Chancery met in New York City on the last Tuesday in March; the New York Supreme Court held its April term in New York City.
2. The “paper” was H’s draft of Washington’s answer to a request by the House of Representatives for papers relating to the negotiation of the Jay Treaty. This draft was enclosed in H to Washington, March 29, 1796. H had asked Washington to return the draft so that he could revise it (H to Washington, April 2, 1796).
