Bartholomew Dandridge, Jr., to Henry Knox

[Philadelphia] Saturday 26th Aprl 1794.

By the President’s order B. Dandridge sends the enclosed letter &c. from the Govr. of No. Carolina to the President, to the Secretary of war.1 The President wishes the Secretary to inform him what has prevented a final settlement of the business respecting the Sloop L’Amie Marguirette, & what is necessary to be done in order to an ultimate decision relatively thereto.2

2No written reply from Knox to GW has been identified, but in a letter of 12 May to Spaight, Knox wrote: “I have the honor to inform your Excellency that in pursuance of your letter of the 10th ultimo the President has decided that the L’amee margueritte having been taken by the illicit privateer Vanqueur de Bastille is to be given up to her previous owners or to the persons appointed by the British minister or Consul for that purpose, & the President requests that your Excellency will please cause her to be restored accordingly.

“An account of the expenses which have been incurred in this business to be authenticated and transmitted to this office” (Nc-Ar: Governors’ Letterbooks).
