New York, July 7, 1796. “Isaac Riley and Hannah his wife for … the Sum of Two thousand Dollars …2 have granted … unto the Said Alexander Hamilton … eight certain Lots of Land … in the Seventh Ward.…”

1. Isaac Riley was a New York City merchant.
2. On July 7, 1796, H made the following entries in his Cash Book, 1795–1804:
| “Lots City of New York Dr. to Isaac Riley for purchase mony of 8 lots ⅌ deed of this date | 2000 |
| “To Cash paid clerks of Supreme & Mayors Court for search for Mortgages & Judgmt | 16.25 |
| “Isaac Riley Dr to Cash for this sum paid him on account of above lots | 1400 |
“Note there is a mortgage from Riley to you for Ballance.” In the margin opposite these entries H wrote: “Mayors not paid 62.10 Qr.” (AD, Hamilton Papers, Library of Congress).
John Barker Church was H’s partner in this purchase. Church assumed one-half of all the expenses. See “Account with John Barker Church,” June 15, 1797.
