From George Washington to Thomas Randall, 2 May 1789

To Thomas Randall

New York May 2nd 1789

Sir.

Desirous of being more particular in expressing my acknowledgments for the elegant Barge which was presented to me on my arrival in this City, than I could be at that moment; I must now request that you will be pleased to offer my best thanks to the Gentlemen who were Owners of it, and assure them in my name that I consider myself much honored by their polite attention. I am, Sir, Your Most obedt Servant

Copy, in the writing of David Humphreys, DNA: RG 59, Miscellaneous Letters; LB, DLC:GW.

Thomas Randall (died c.1797), a prominent New York resident, served as alderman from the South Ward of the city and was a warden of the port and an active member of Trinity Episcopal Church. In 1783 he was presiding officer of the Common Council of the City of New York. Randall was coxswain of the ceremonial barge that transported GW to the city for his inauguration. See Elias Boudinot to GW, 22 April 1789.
