To John Jay from Thomas Pinckney, 25 August 1796

From Thomas Pinckney

London 25th. August 1796

Dear Sir,

In compliance with the request contained in your favor of the 18th. of June1 by Mr King I inclose an acknowledgement of my having received from you the sum of £1185..16.0 towards the fund for prosecuting the claims of our Citizens in cases of capture. I have likewise to acknowledge the receipt of your favor by Mr. Gore;2 & while I express my satisfaction in the appointments which have lately been made of our public Agents to this Country, I am happy to have it in my power to congratulate You upon the Office of the fifth Commissioner having fallen to our friend Col. Trumbull.

Mr. King not having arrived in time for me to embark with a reasonable prospect of reaching home before the Autumnal Equinox, I have deferred my departure till that stormy season shall have passed. On my arrival in America I shall doubtless learn whether there will be a probability, as suggested in your last favor, that I may be of utility there, in a line compatible with the circumstances in which I may then find myself— ’till then I can only say that my disposition in general prompts me to render what services may be in my power when not inconsistant with the duties I owe to my young family or repugnant to my feelings of propriety.

Accept, dear Sir, my best wishes for your health & prosperity and believe me to be with perfect esteem and respectful regard Your faithful & most obedient Servant,

Thomas Pinckney

His Exy. Mr Jay
