Sir

I have the honor to transmit you, the enclosed letter, dated the 20th. inst: received this day, from the Governor of Maryland, with sundry depositions, relative to the augmentation of force alledged to have been received in the port of Baltimore by the French Privateer Schooner Industry, and the capture of the Brig Cunningham by the Sans Cullotes of Marseilles.

I have the honor also to inclose a statement respecting the pay &c. supposed to be due the Marquis de la Fayette had he not relinquished the same. I am, Sir, Most respectfully—Your obedt: Servt:

Enclosures: (1) Governor Thomas Sim Lee to Knox, Council Chamber, 20 Dec. 1793, enclosing for transmittal to the President examinations into the alleged augmentation of force in the port of Baltimore by the French privateer Industry and the capture of the brig Conyngham by the French privateer Sans Culottes of Marseilles, the institution of which he had notified Knox in a letter of 2 Dec. 1793 (FC in MdAA: Letterbooks of Governor and Council). (2) Statement of Joseph Howell to Knox, War Department, Accountant’s Office, 24 Dec. 1793, showing that the Marquis de Lafayette’s pay as a major general in the Continental Army from 31 July 1777 to 3 Nov. 1783 and commutation amounted to 24,100 12/90 dollars, including extra pay for an estimated year on separate command, “the precise time to be ascertained at a future period” (Tr in DNA: RG 46, Senate Records, 3d Cong., 1 st sess., at foot of text: “Copy <Original on file in the war office—Jno. Stagg Junr. Chf. Clk:>”; Tr in Lb in same, TR). Other enclosures not found.
