From Alexander Hamilton

Treasury Department [New York] May 28th 1790.

The Secretary of the Treasury has the honor respectfully to submit to the President of the United states, for his approbation, five Contracts made by the superintendant of the Light house, piers &c. on the river and Bay of Delaware, and the letter received with them.

After due examination in this Office, the Contracts appear advantageous to the United states. Should they be approved, immediate attention will be paid to supplying the omission of the day of the Month in the Contract with Michael Dawson.1

1The enclosed contracts for supplies and services were transmitted to Hamilton by William Allibone, superintendent of lighthouses, buoys, and beacons on the Delaware River on 22 May 1790 (Syrett, Hamilton Papers, description begins Harold C. Syrett et al., eds. The Papers of Alexander Hamilton. 27 vols. New York, 1961–87. description ends 6:428). Lear replied to Hamilton on 29 May 1790: “The President of the united states approves of the following contracts which have been submitted to his consideration by the Secretary of the Treasury Vizt.

“Articles of Contract entered into on the 12 day of May 1790 between Wil-Ham Allibone Superintendant of the Lighthouse Beacons &c. in the Bay & river Delaware—and Hews and Anthony to supply the Lighthouse on Cape Henlopen with oil for one year from the date of said contract at the rate of 3/7 Pennsyla curry ⅌ Gallon.

“Articles of Contract entered into on the 19th day of May 1790 between William Allibone aforesaid & Daniel Rodney to transport the oil and other necessaries to the Light-house on Cape Henlopen for 60 Dols. ⅌ year.

“Articles of Contract entered into on the 21st day of May 1790 between William Allibone aforesaid & Henry Drinker to furnish Iron Castings for mooring the Beacons and Buoys in the Bay and river Delaware at the rate of 14/ Pa Curry per ⟨Cut.⟩ for said Castings.

“Articles of Contract enter’d into on the 11th day of May 1790 between Wm Allibone aforesaid & Mathew Van Duren [Dusen] to furnish mooring chains &c. for the Beacons & buoys in the Bay & river Delaware at the rate of 7d. Penna Cury per pound.

“Articles of Contract entered into between Wm Allibone aforesaid, and Michael Dawson to attend to & shift said Beacons & buoys at the rate of £200 pennsa cury per year” (DLC:GW).
