[Newport, Rhode Island] April 2, 1792. “This letter will be accompanied by a weekly return of monies received and paid … and also a Statement of the case of the Brig Chance,1 and papers respectg. the same. I shall refrain from prosecuting Capt. Corey.”2

1The brig Chance was owned by John Innis Clarke and Joseph Nightingale, Providence merchants. On July 26, 1792, a part of the penalty incurred under “An Act to provide more effectually for the collection of the duties imposed by law on goods, wares and merchandise imported into the United States, and on the tonnage of ships or vessels” (1 Stat. 145–78 [August 4, 1790]) was remitted by H (DS, Columbia University Libraries).
